Family tax benefit
I will not say this again. Well, I probably will. But with the news that the government is to increase the FTB, I feel once more obliged to point out: Having children is not the be-all and end-all of existence. Having children does not make a person a better person. Not everybody should have children. Not everybody wants children. Having children doesn’t make you more entitled to help. ...

New Years Resolutions
I had only one resolution for 2011, and that was:  I will not have any resolutions. Did I keep it? Did I break it? Very Zen. In any case, I don’t usually subscribe to the New Years Resolutions school of thought. What difference does it make when you resolve to do something? You want to do it, you do it. Don’t decide to do it at the beginning of the year - decide to do it when you...

2011
Inspired by Trish and Rassie: I began 2011 in debt and pretty normal. Not a lot changed in 2011. I am still in debt, and things are still normal. I did not move house, though I nearly did. Very little about my life changed. January I got busted for tweeting at work, and saying things about my employer I shouldn’t have said. I survived that, but briefly thought about changing jobs. I...

The Iron Lady
It’s difficult to review a movie like the Iron Lady, but it must have been even harder to make it in the first place. The subject matter, Margaret Hilda Thatcher, is so polarising and so important as to make any biopic almost impossible to capture the essence of the woman and the policies of her government. Where do you start a task like that? Where can one start of a review of a movie like...

Hot dog pizza
I cannot believe this idea had not occurred to mainstream pizza companies before. My friend made it this evening and it was INCREDIBALLS. It’s simply a pizza that tastes like a hot dog. Start with a standard pizza base, add tomato paste, then add sliced frankfurts, cheese, onion, bacon and BBQ sauce. Then cook for 10-20 mins as needed. And that’s it! So amazing!

The problems of the single male
Yesterday in one of those lunch room small talk conversations, my colleague asked me what I was doing for Christmas. “Just family,” I said. “I’ll be camping out at my parents’ place all weekend.” There was a pause. “Do you have a girlfriend?” the colleague asked. I nearly choked. The question couldn’t have been more out of the blue or,...

First they told us that the boats were a problem that needed to be stopped because we had too many.problems to deal with. Then they started telling us that they had to do something about the boats because we had to keep our population sustainable. Then they told us they needed to stop the boats because there had to be an orderly process for people seeking asylum and boat people were...

Big political issues of the ages
1890s: Federation. Should the six Australian colonies become a nation? What will this mean for trade, for the economy, for the Empire? What will it mean for us as a society? 1900s: Trade. Should protectionism or free trade be the main economic policy driving our trade policy? Should we look after our own or let market forces do their work? 1910s: Socialism. Can the government look after workers?...

starsgowaltzing: I just saw magazine instructing women on how to give him to give him the big ‘O’. There is nothing new or unusual or sadly, particularly uncommon about these articles but it made unspeakably furious because last time I checked it wasn’t men’s bodies we had trouble… Don’t understand this. It’s not particularly difficult to please men in bed. Or at least, one...

Why officeworks is rubbish
These are the experiences I have had with OfficeWorks in the last year. Note how none of them, not one, is positive. Wanted to buy a bookshelf. Found one in OfficeWorks I liked. Was informed it was not in stock. Found another. Was informed it was not in stock. Found a third one. Was told they would not deliver it on weekends. Gave them a second chance some weeks later. Again, found two shelves I...

The Skeleton speaks again! I blamed The Greens because they deserve it. They are not blameless. That proves something to you about me then. Pointlessly. And which is irrelevant when it comes to finding a solution to the problem of Asylum Seekers dying on the way to Australia. Which you appear to be less interested in. You appear to be more interested in name calling. And judgemental...

So here was a comment on my post this morning on asylum-seeker politics from someone calling themselves HillbillySkeleton. I know who it was.  Absolute bullshit. You’re ascribing motive to the Labor Party’s decision to try and implement the Bali Process, yes, in order to save Asylum Seekers’ lives, that The Greens don’t have the guts to support. Malaysia will NOT cane...

I do hate to go on but...
…a lot of people I know are into this roller derby thing and that’s fine, I don’t care, whatever. I’m not allowed to understand it, that’s fine too, whatever. It’s their hobby, they can do what they like, I go do my own shit and don’t ask them to understand and so on. Free country, you can do what you like. But I do wish they’d talk about something...

naysayersspeak replied to your post: Stop the bullshit I disagree slightly: one thing we could do is accept way more migrants under who apply for asylum in their own country, and make the process easier. 4000 a year, mostly relatives, is nowhere near enough. Maybe fewer people will get on boats then. It might, theoretically, make a slight difference. Certainly making it easier to get families in...

Stop the bullshit
There are two problems in the “asylum seeker” conundrum. One of them isn’t really a problem, and the other undoubtedly is but it’s one without any real solution. The first problem is that migrants in boats keep washing up in Australia. It would be a problem if, for instance, they arrived with guns, dynamite and a desire to conquer this great brown land but they...

tritanium replied to your post: So what I’m hearing is that Mind you, a candidate still has to have the values that the community is looking for in a representative. If they don’t have that, then regardless of where they come from, they won’t be elected. Not true at all. If the seat is a blue-ribbon Labor seat like Blaxland, the ALP could conscript a far-right Churchie fundamentalist into...

So what I'm hearing is that
this is fine. I was born in Sutherland. I lived in Gymea, then in Mortdale. When I was 6 I moved to Canberra, attending school in Lyons, Pearce, Richardson, Calwell and Tuggeranong. I grew up in Tuggeranong (Richardson and Calwell). I’ve lived in Canberra for 22 years. I live in Hughes, I work in Parkes. But if I wanted to go and run as a candidate in Kalgoorlie, a town I’ve never...

Right
Since local Members of Parliament are no longer required to have anything to do whatsoever with the electorate they represent, I decided to mix them up. I intend to write to the Speaker and insist these changes be made and that all members of the lower house be reassigned to an electorate at random. Because it was random, a few MPs will end up in the same seat they started in. Tony Crook remains...

Okay so clearly expecting your local member to actually live in your local electorate is unreasonable. I’m now declaring my intention to stand in the Division of Fremantle. I’ve never been to Fremantle. I know vaguely where it is. I’ve seen it on a map. I’m highly qualified, apparently.
